Butler's Continuous Improvement through AQIP

This page contains information about Butler's relationship with the Academic Quality Improvement Program (Higher Learning Commission). AQIP is the college's way of maintaining its accreditation.

As an AQIP institution, Butler is required to maintain annual "action projects" that are targeted at specific areas of the college. These projects are designed to create improvements that strengthen Butler's effectiveness in meeting the needs of its students and other stakeholders.

Another key requirement of AQIP is the Systems Portfolio, which is a summary of the current state of the college's systems and processes. In the Portfolio, the college provides evidence that documents how we function as an educational institution committed to continuous quality improvement.

Based on the status reports for our annual projects, our Systems Portfolio, and an on-site Quality Check-Up Visit, AQIP provides the college important feedback on our current state of effectiveness relative to nine AQIP criteria. The Systems Appraisal is a formal review of the college's Systems Portfolio, conducted by a panel of trained AQIP readers. This feedback, also available in a short Executive Summary, helps the college define areas of strength and areas that need further improvement.

The Quality Check-Up visit was conducted September 23-25. An Institutional Update and a Federal Compliance Report were prepared for this visit, along with a detailed agenda. After the visit, the Quality Check-Up Team provided a report evaluating our compliance with the Commission's Criteria for Accreditation and Federal Compliance Program, along with Butler's use of feedback from the Systems Appraisal and our commitment to continuous quality improvement.

At Butler, AQIP is part of an overall Strategic Planning Framework that defines our ongoing institutional priorities, goals and key performance indicators. Through this framework, the college can take a holistic approach to evaluating its current state of effectiveness and define strategic responses to the changing needs and expectations of its stakeholders. The college enacts the planning framework through the Integrated Planning and Resource Allocation (IPRA) process. Dr. Jackie Vietti's update on IPRA and our strategic planning initiatives was delivered at the fall 2009 inservice.
